Marco Kempf

I am an emerging artist from Karlsruhe (DE) working at the interface of physical computing, creative coding and electroacoustic composition in the field of spatial audio. I graduated from the Department of Media Arts and Sciences at the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences with a thesis on the artistic use of brain-computer interfaces. I study media art at Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design and I am an active member of the research group on Artificial Intelligence and Media Philosophy (KIM). I investigate how technology, creativity, society and economy can powerfully transform one another. Central to my practice is the idea that technological invention is intrinsic the human desire to expand the body (and mind) and self expression. I explore these ideas by using expanded body-sensory techniques and mind expansion with self-made electronics or coding.
To open the black box for me is a gesture of self-empowerment - DIY Ethos is a critical position in my efforts to create beauty and meaning as asks questions of our consumerist economy and throwaway society. In my compositions I include time and space as an expanding element to improve common listening habits and explore the borders of musical and spatial representation. Recent presentations of my work include: ZKM Karlsruhe (DE), IRCAM Paris (FR), Funzone Santa Barbara (USA), Marshall McLuhan Salon (DE), etc…
